Our rats are cherished companions who live in a dedicated, climate-conscious space designed with their health and happiness in mind. Their enclosures—separate for males and females—are positioned side by side. There is a raised plywood platform to ensure optimal airflow and to securely support the Strong Rat cages above.
The room is equipped with an air purifier, insect control measures, and screened doors to maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. A spacious play table provides daily enrichment, allowing our rats to explore, dig, swim, climb, and snack in a stimulating and supervised setting. Every detail is thoughtfully curated to support their well-being and encourage natural behaviors.
Our boys live in a double 'Critter Nation' style cage. This quadruple cage is two massive cages joined together giving them ample room to play, exercise, explore, climb and sleep.
The base is bioactive with coco coir and they love making tunnels and digging in the lower section. Some pine filled containers on the upper level with hammocks, sputnik, wheel ropes and levels

From 5.5 weeks baby boys live in a Strong Rat Cage with some adult males so they can learn how to socialise with other rats. They have fall breaks, ropes, hides to sleep in and a wheel. Around 8 weeks they will be adopted to their forever families.
At 5.5 weeks the girls get their own Stron Rat Cage. Girls from the litter(s) and their mum(s) are given a busy cage with plenty of fall breaks and other enrichment items like ropes, wheel, sputnik, hammocks, levels and fall breaks. Around 8 weeks they will go to their forever homes.

The pink bed comes from a dollar store, I cut entries with kitchen scissors and attached to the cage with pipe cleaners. The white 'crate' is from Kmart and is cable tied to the cage.
A seagrass basket upside down makes a good hide for your play/free-roaming area. And cardboard boxes are also a great (not to mention free) option.
Wooden ladders and pumice shelves or lava ledges are available in the bird department of most pet shops and make great cage or free play toys.
