Adoption Process

Each and every rat in our mischief is a cherished companion - and we are committed to finding the very best homes for them.

If you’re ready to welcome a pair (or more) of rats into your life, please take a moment to read through our adoption contract. If you agree with the terms, simply fill out the form below to join our waitlist. You can check back here or follow us on Facebook or Instagram for updates on current and upcoming litters.

We aim to make the adoption process unique for our extended families but some steps work the same for all:

• Waitlist: No deposit is required to join the waitlist or to respond to our “babies are nearly ready” emails.

• 6 Weeks Old: When the babies reach around 6 weeks, we’ll email everyone on the waitlist to confirm interest. From there, we’ll create a shortlist. Please be patient—litter sizes, coat colours and the number of Angora rats born vary and are beyond our control.

• If your cage is suitable and you are shortlisted I'll invite you to meet the rats, in person if you are based in Auckland or by video call if you are farther afield. 

• 8 Weeks Old: Babies are ready to head to their new homes! Rats must be adopted in same-gender pairs or trios, unless discussed otherwise. Be sure to bring a secure carrier when you come to collect.

Ongoing Support

If you have any questions about the contract or need help getting set up for your new rats, we’re here for you. And if life ever changes and you’re no longer able to care for your adopted rats, please reach out—we’ll always take them back, no questions asked.

Homing Ethics

We will seek the best possible homes for every rat. Rats will not be adopted out under 8 weeks of age.

This rattery will only home healthy animals who are sound in temperament and free from parasites. 

This rattery will ensure the adopter is fully informed when adopting an animal which has a known defect, health, or other physical condition or any deviation from the standard. 

This rattery will take responsibility for any offspring produced by a doe which was unknowingly pregnant when adopted.

This rattery will take back or find a home for any animal whose placement is not successful. 

This rattery will provide adopters instructions on feeding, housing, and general care. 

This rattery will provide the new owner with ongoing support and assistance with problems that may arise.

All rats from this rattery are recorded in a database with the adopters name and email address for monitoring the health of our rats. 

📝Adoption Contract

Below is our adoption contract, which you will be asked to sign electronically upon approval to adopt rats from Misty’s Mischief. Please read each statement carefully and check the boxes to confirm your agreement. 

The Adopter checklist:

☐ I accept responsibility for caring for my rat(s) and providing for their welfare.
☐ If I am unable to continue caring for my rat(s), I will contact Misty’s Mischief to arrange rehoming.
☐ My rat(s) will live as part of the family with daily interaction and a secure indoor enclosure.
☐ My rat(s) will be protected from cats, dogs, and other predators or dangers.
☐ I will provide positive socialisation, enrichment, and interaction, including toys, tunnels, a wheel, and a cosy sleeping space.
☐ I will seek prompt veterinary care when needed.
☐ I will ensure my rat(s) have companionship with at least one other same-sex (or desexed opposite-sex) rat.
☐ I will keep my rat(s) in a safe, comfortable enclosure with appropriate bedding, cleaned regularly.
☐ I will feed my rat(s) a healthy, balanced diet and ensure fresh water is always available.
☐ I will never neglect or abuse my rat(s), mentally or physically.
☐ I will keep Misty’s Mischief informed of major health or temperament issues, including dates of death.
☐ I understand that Misty’s Mischief guarantees the rat(s) are healthy at adoption, but cannot guarantee continued health after leaving the rattery.
☐ I have examined the rat(s) and agree they appear healthy.
☐ I will not purposefully breed rats adopted from Misty’s Mischief.
☐ I understand this agreement is intended to last for the lifetime of the animal(s).
